  • Problem

As an originator every day, I spend time opening competitor websites to learn current grain pricing.

Originator is a client-based role whose main job is to source grain.

Problem Statement

Today, Originators get information on local markets from disparate, difficult to coordinate, and often out-of-date sources. They must contextualize this information to the seller they are working with, work through a decision making process with that sell, and then enter transactions into a separate system.

With integrated Decision Tools, supporting information is directly integrated with and configured to a their bids and the specific location context/characteristics of the seller they are working with. This discovery and discussion are tied directly to a checkout flow, making the likelihood to complete transaction higher.

Wireframes

This work has previous iterations within Indigo over the years. I was not starting from scratch. The goal was to create an experience that geographically display bid data across our customers geographic competitor base. I started with a page layout and address the goal of each section of the page. This feature is not workflow heavy. The goal is engagement verse transactions.

Preparation

Created a moderator guide with scenarios to walk users through a discovery question session before sharing the prototype I created

Sessions

Conducted four user research interviews with originators and merchandisers in the agriculture industry. Utilizing the moderator guide and using the prototype I created.

Learnings

Tagged sessions with company wide and product specific tags to find highlights and take aways from the research sessions. Shared take aways in a weekly meeting with the product organization.

User Research

At Indigo we are lucky to have User Research arm, but this department functions as an internal consultant. I worked with the team to create moderators guide, a recruitment parameter and prototype to test. I also ran all the sessions starting with a discovery session that lead to the prototype test. I worked with the research team to collect all the assets in Dovetail and do analysis on the study. I later presented the findings to the entire product tech organization in a weekly meeting.

Design

After extensive research, I brought the concept to life using components from the web library and linking up prototypes. Working with maps in Figma exposed me to new plug ins and limitations with map interactions in the prototype library.

Execution

I believe execution is a siginificant part of the product designer role. It is important to have a working relationship and communication channels with my frontend developers. At Indigo there is no QA team, so most testing is done by product management and design. Design is responsible for executing any final changes to the build before release.

Future Iterations

At Indigo we are always thinking about the future. In addition to many small tweaks with color and additional filters, I have started work to design a customized table for our map experience. This component will be used across the entire organization to enable our data to interact with heavy visual experiences such as maps and charts.
